Estimates in writing are very important.  Having a verifiable payment amount for the work proposed saves a lot of hassle and is a great ‘cure’ for those plumbers with ‘bad memories’ when the final invoice payment amount is written.  The quality of material can also be stated on invoices for bidding comparisons.

Bids taken over the telephone, written on the back of a business card or wild estimates from some drunken random unlicensed ‘handyman’, are often not serious estimates.
